Complete Guide to Automatic Gate Motors: How They Work, When to Fix Them, and When to Call a Pro

Your automatic gate is one of the hardest-working parts of your home. This guide covers everything you need to know — how they work, the brands we install, simple fixes you can try yourself, when to call a professional, and the optional extras that make your gate smarter and safer.

How automatic gate motors work

An automatic gate motor is straightforward engineering. It uses an electric motor to drive a mechanical system that opens and closes your gate smoothly and safely.

For sliding gates: The motor drives a rack-and-pinion mechanism (think of a gear moving along a toothed rail). This pulls the gate along its track.

For swing gates: The motor uses a hydraulic or mechanical arm to push or pull the gate open and closed, like a door hinge on steroids.

Safety limits are built in so the gate stops at the right spot — fully open and fully closed. Without proper limits, a gate can jam, overshoot, or fail to close fully, creating a security risk. Most residential gates run on mains power (240V), though solar systems are ideal if you're off the grid or want to avoid running power lines.

The brands we install: Merlin, Centsys & more

We specialise in Merlin and Centsys, but we service and install all major automation brands. Here's what you need to know:

Merlin

Our primary choice for most residential installs. Full range of sliding, swing, and solar gate motors, plus garage door openers. 3–7 year manufacturer warranty depending on the model. Known for smooth, quiet operation.

Centsys

A solid alternative, especially when budget is a priority or when a specific setup calls for their system. 24-month manufacturer warranty. Equally reliable for residential use.

Both brands integrate well with remotes, keypads, safety beams, and smart home systems like myQ. We'll recommend the right one for your gate weight, power type, and budget — never the most expensive option. If you already have a different brand installed, no problem. We service all brands and can help with repairs, maintenance, or upgrades.

Easy fixes you can try before calling us

Not every gate issue needs a technician. Here are some quick checks you can do yourself:

Gate won't open or close

  • Check the remote batteries. Dead batteries are the #1 reason gates don't respond.
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the gate track or swing path (leaves, debris, parked cars).
  • Check that the gate isn't locked manually (some gates have a manual override).

Gate opens but won't close

  • Look for an obstruction in the gate path. Safety beams detect blockages and prevent the gate from closing.
  • Check if the safety beam lens is dirty or misaligned. A quick clean might fix it.
  • Ensure the remote is in range and the batteries are fresh.

Gate moves slowly or struggles

  • Dirt and debris in the track slow down sliding gates. Sweep the track clean and apply a light silicone-based lubricant (not WD-40 — it attracts dirt).
  • For swing gates, check that the hinges aren't rusted or stiff. A light oil can help.

Gate makes noise

  • Squeaking usually means the track or hinges need lubrication.
  • Grinding or clunking sounds suggest something is loose or worn inside the motor — this one needs a professional.

Remote doesn't work

  • Replace the batteries first.
  • If that doesn't work, the remote may need reprogramming. Check your Owner's Handbook for instructions, or give us a call.

When to call a professional

Some issues are beyond a quick fix. Call us if:

The motor won't turn on at all. This could be a power issue, a blown fuse, or an internal motor fault.

The gate is stuck halfway. This usually means the motor has stalled or the limits are set incorrectly.

You hear grinding, clicking, or clunking sounds. These indicate internal wear or damage.

The gate is slow, jerky, or struggles to open and close. This suggests the motor is wearing out or the system needs servicing.

Safety beams aren't working. A faulty safety beam is a security and safety issue.

You want to upgrade or replace the motor. We'll assess whether a repair makes sense or if replacement is the better choice.

Our process is simple: We come out, diagnose the problem, and give you a clear quote before any work starts. A call-out fee applies ($175 residential, $195 commercial for the first 30 minutes), but it's credited toward any repair or installation work you proceed with. See our gate motor installation and repair page for full details.

Optional extras that add safety, convenience & control

Your gate can do more than just open and close. Here are the extras we offer:

Safety Beams

Invisible infrared beams that detect movement in the gate path. If something (or someone) is in the way, the gate stops immediately. Essential for homes with kids or pets. Cost is modest, and the peace of mind is priceless.

Keypads

Forget the remote. A keypad lets you open the gate with a PIN code. Great for tradespeople, delivery drivers, or family members who've lost their remote.

myQ Smart Connectivity

Turn your gate into a smart device. Open and close it from your phone, set schedules, get alerts when the gate opens, and integrate with other smart home systems. Ideal if you want remote access or want to monitor who's coming and going.

Battery Backup Units

Lose power during a storm? A battery backup keeps your gate working even if the mains goes down. You can still open and close it manually or via remote until power is restored.

Additional Remotes

Extra remotes for family members, guests, or backup. We can program them to work with your existing system.

Gate Accessories

We stock Merlin and Centsys remotes, keypads, safety beams, and accessories. If you need a replacement part or want to upgrade, we've got you covered.
