Garage Door Motor — Repair or Replace?
A practical guide to making the right call. We'll walk you through the key factors so you don't spend money on a repair that won't last — or replace a motor that just needs a simple fix.
When your garage door motor stops working, the first question is always the same: is it worth repairing, or should you just replace it? The honest answer depends on a few key factors — age, fault type, parts availability, and cost.
Here's how we think about it, and how we explain it to our customers every day.
Repair makes sense when…
- Motor is under 8–10 years old
- One specific fault (board, capacitor, remote receiver)
- No history of repeated breakdowns
- Parts are available and affordable
- Repair cost is under 50% of a new motor installed
Replace when…
- Motor is over 10 years old
- Multiple faults at once
- Parts discontinued or hard to source
- Repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement
- You want myQ smart control or battery backup
Check the age of the motor
If the motor is less than 8–10 years old, a repair is usually worth considering. Motors older than 10 years that have had repeated issues are generally better replaced — parts may be discontinued and the motor is likely near end of life.
Identify the specific fault
A specific component fault (failed circuit board, worn capacitor, faulty limit switch, dead remote receiver) is usually repairable. If the motor has multiple simultaneous faults or the main drive mechanism has failed, replacement is often more cost-effective.
Check parts availability
For older brands like B&D, Grifco and ATA, parts availability varies. If replacement parts are discontinued or hard to source, a repair may only be a temporary fix. Merlin parts are well-supported in Australia.
Compare repair cost vs replacement cost
If the repair cost is more than 50% of the cost of a new motor installed, replacement is usually the better value. A new Merlin garage door opener starts from around $910 installed with a 5–7 year manufacturer warranty.
Consider what features you want
If you want myQ smart connectivity (open your garage door from your phone), quieter belt-drive operation, or a longer warranty, a new Merlin opener may be worth the upgrade even if a repair is technically possible.
