When to repair vs replace your gate or garage door motor

Not every fault means you need a new motor. Here's a practical guide to help you understand when a repair makes sense — and when replacement is the better call.

Repair is usually worth it when…

  • The motor is less than 8–10 years old
  • The fault is a specific component (board, capacitor, limit switch, remote receiver)
  • Parts are still available from the manufacturer
  • The motor has been reliable up until now
  • The repair cost is well under half the price of a new motor installed

Replacement makes more sense when…

  • The motor is 10+ years old and showing multiple issues
  • Parts are discontinued or hard to source
  • The motor has had repeated failures
  • Repair cost is close to or more than half the price of a new motor
  • You want modern features (myQ, quieter operation, better safety)

We'll give you an honest recommendation

We don't push replacements when a repair will do the job. And we won't waste your money on a repair if the motor is on its last legs. You'll get a clear explanation of the fault, your options, and our recommendation — then you decide. For replacements, we install Merlin and Centsys automation systems.

Warranty service — parts vs labour

Plain English version

Warranty can be confusing, so here's the simple version. This applies to both gate motors and garage door motors:

Some manufacturers provide a parts warranty for specific components — this covers both gate and garage door automation equipment.

Labour, travel and onsite time may still be chargeable depending on the age of the install, the type of fault, and what the manufacturer covers.

If parts are required, we'll explain the process and confirm any costs before we proceed.

If your issue is confirmed as a warranty fault

If, after assessment, the issue is confirmed as a warranty fault, a refund of the call-out fee may apply in line with the terms on this page. We'll confirm this with you once the assessment is completed.

Warranty applies only to equipment we installed

We can only manage warranty claims for gate or garage door automation equipment that we originally supplied and installed. Unlike the automotive industry, automation manufacturers do not cover labour costs for warranty work, and there is no centralised service history or database that tracks whether a system has been properly maintained over its lifetime.

This means that for equipment installed by another company, we have no way to verify the installation quality, confirm the service history, or determine whether the required maintenance schedule has been followed — all of which can affect warranty eligibility. In these cases, we recommend contacting the original installer in the first instance.
